New Facility Will Be First LEED-Certified “Green” Hangar in the U.S.
LOS ANGELES, Calif.—Avjet Corporation, a worldwide leader in private aviation solutions, has begun construction of the first Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System-certified private hangar in the nation. The new 63,653-square-foot hangar facility at 3030 Clybourn Avenue in Burbank will include a 51,138-square-foot hangar area and an attached, two-story, 12,515-square-foot office space, situated on a 2.8 acre site.
Innovative and locally-sensitive design elements are incorporated throughout the project. The facility will feature aviation-inspired, clear-finish metal exterior panels, a wing-shaped entry canopy, and abundant glass. The building will be set back from the street, surrounded by a substantial landscaping including palm trees and colorful native plants.
Integrated throughout the facility are “green” design elements, such as photovoltaic power, recycled-content material, and resource-efficient systems that together make the facility the nation’s first LEED-certified private hangar.
Another national first for this project is the use of a ground-breaking water mist fire suppression system in the hangar. In case of fire, this system uses substantially less water than a conventional system and suppresses the fire without employing the hazardous chemicals associated with a foam system. Avjet has collaborated closely with the City of Burbank Fire Department on this system, which the Department hopes will serve as a model for future hangar developments.
