AVJET OPENS WORLD'S FIRST LEED PLATINUM-RATED JET HANGAR
December 29, 2008
BURBANK, Calif.—Avjet Corporation, an international provider of private air travel solutions, in conjunction with Shangri-La Construction, recently opened the world’s first private aircraft hangar to achieve Platinum certification under the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Rating System TM.
The new Hangar 25, located at Bob Hope Airport in Burbank, California, was unveiled at a December 9 ceremony attended by Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, representatives from LEED, officials from Bob Hope Airport, and members of the general aviation community.
“With three decades of experience and a stellar reputation as an industry leader, Avjet is the perfect partner to help Shangri-La Construction bring sustainability and environmental innovation to the aviation sector,” said Andy Meyers, president of Shangri-La Construction. “Achieving LEED Platinum certification for Hangar 25 would not have been possible without Avjet’s invaluable insight into the development, construction and management of the facility.”
“Avjet demonstrated a true commitment to our mutual goals of carbon reduction and operational savings,” added Meyers.
Hangar 25’s key sustainable design features include:
- Solar array that produces 110% of the building’s operational electricity needs.
- Electric tow and other vehicles powered by the solar array instead of diesel.
- Daylight harvesting through strategic design, including a diamond-polished concrete floor that reflects light.
- Diamond-polished concrete floor does not use toxic sealants that require regular reapplication and maintenance.
- Water-based, high-fog fire suppression system eliminates volatile chemicals that require storage infrastructure, regular replacement, and, if deployed, damage aircraft and require hazardous materials cleanup.
- Fans and evaporative coolers employed to eliminate need for refrigerant-based cooling.
- Plumbing that reduces water use by 60 percent through low-flush, low-flow and waterless fixtures to reduce the burden on city water supply and wastewater systems.
- Sustainable landscaping including the use of drought-tolerant native plants and a no-mow, no-water Synlawn.
"We are proud to have been selected by Shangri-La as the operating partner for Hangar 25,” said Avjet Chairman and CEO Marc Foulkrod. “They have proven to be wonderful business partners in a process that will set the standard for environmental responsibility in our industry for years to come. Hangar 25 is further evidence of Avjet’s ongoing commitment to taking a leadership role in general aviation.”
